7 Quick Tips to Get More People To Open Your Emails

January 29, 2016

Hands up if you ever woke up thinking: “Oh crap, I really need to write a newsletter today. It’s been weeks.”

Me too.

For the past four years working with health and life coaches, the subject of writing consistent newsletters tends to be ONE business area that keeps us really overwhelmed and stuck. And once you finally take the time to write a newsletter, gather the courage to share something personal and hit “publish” – it can be quite humbling to see a low open rate.

There are plenty of formulas and templates that exist on this subject.

But I’ve found most templates don’t work well (and let’s face it – they’re a bit stuck in an old online business model). Instead, what we need is to find our voice through our writing, be open to the creative process and write from our hearts.

My intention for you is to consider this crazy marketing idea that you don’t need more formulas, templates or rules to follow in order to improve your email open rates. What you do need is a new way to explore what it’s like to “be” with people – yes, even through email. There is an art (not just science) to writing newsletters.

The coolest part about all of this – as a coach, connecting with people is where you naturally excel.

7 Quick Tips

  1. Shape a real relationship with people on your list before you ask them to buy something from you. This one is critical. Don’t just **only** email your list when you have something to sell. It’s the fastest way to dry up your list.
  2. Send content that solves a problem. Solving your clients’ problem before you ask them for any business will create a solid reputation for value and quality service.
  3. Only sign people up to your list with their permission. This is especially important to keep in mind when doing in-person networking, live events and joint ventures.
  4. Let go of thinking your newsletter will be perfect. Writing is like a fine wine; it gets better with time.
  5. Notice what emails YOU open. Have a love affair with your swipe file (where you store all those promotional and sales emails you want to reference later for ideas).
  6. Be relentlessly helpful.
  7. Let yourself get visible! Share a little bit about yourself in each newsletter you send out. Sprinkle in your personality. Let people get to know you. Deeper connection breads trust + trust is what your clients need to want to purchase from you.
